How to Trust God When You Don't Understand What He's Doing

There's a version of trust that only shows up when things make sense. God is clearly moving, you can see the outline of the plan, and it feels natural to say you trust Him. Then there's a harder version, the kind that gets tested when nothing is clear and nothing is moving the way you hoped it would by now.

Psalm 59:16 says, "But I will sing of your strength, in the morning I will sing of your love, for you are my fortress, my refuge in times of trouble."

Look at when David wrote that. The heading of Psalm 59 tells us Saul had already sent men to watch David's house so they could kill him in the morning. David wasn't writing this after the danger passed. He wrote it while men were still outside waiting for daylight. He chose to sing about God's strength before he knew how the story would end.

That's the posture I think we miss most when we're in trouble. We treat praise like something we owe God after He fixes the situation, like a thank you card sent once we're safely on the other side. But keeping the praise going up while you're still in the middle of it is the deeper act of trust. It's you telling God, without needing to say it out loud, that you are surrendered. That you trust Him. Not because you can see how it ends, but because you already know who He is.

That distinction matters more than it sounds. Trusting God's plan and trusting God's character are two different things. You can lose all visibility into the plan and still hold onto the character, because His character was never dependent on how clear your situation looks today. He is a provider. He is a protector. Those aren't titles that only apply when life is calm and predictable. David needed a protector while men were watching his house. You don't have to fully understand what God is doing to still know what He is like.

If you're in a season like that right now, ask yourself what God has already proven about His character in your life, even before this current situation. Ask what it would look like to praise Him today specifically because of who He is, not because of how things are going. Ask what changes if you stop waiting for the trouble to pass before you thank Him for being your provider and protector.

Take a moment today and thank God for the provider and protector He already is, even in the parts of your life you can't fully make sense of right now. That's not blind faith. That's informed trust, built on a track record He's already given you.
