Why Does the Bible Compare God to a Rock? What That Means When Everything Around You Keeps Changing

I was listening to a kids Bible experience the other day, and the narrator asked why the Bible compares God to a rock instead of a tree, grass, a flower, or the clouds. That question made me want to dig deeper.

Trees, grass, flowers, clouds, none of them survive the elements the way a rock does. They wither. They pass. They do not hold up against time, weather, or pressure. A rock does. A rock stays exactly where it is no matter what gets thrown at it.

That is who God is.

Isaiah 26:4 says, 'Trust in the Lord forever, for the Lord, the Lord himself, is the rock eternal.' Not the rock for a season. The rock eternal.

A devotional called Who Do You Trust reminded me we are called to trust God even when circumstances do not make sense, even in the middle of pain and loss, because he promises to come through for us. Not to explain everything. To come through.

People are human. Even the ones who love you may disappoint you or not be able to show up the way you needed. God does not wait to be needed. He actively wants you to rely on him. That is a different kind of relationship.

He has promised to fight for us, never leave us, make a way for us, love us, protect us, stay faithful to us. Specific promises from a God who keeps his word. Nothing shakes him. Nothing can keep his plans for you from coming to pass.
