What Does It Mean to Follow God Today?

John 12:26 says, "Whoever serves me must follow me; and where I am, my servant also will be. My Father will honor the one who serves me."

As I was thinking about this verse my first thought was, if you lived in Jesus's actual day, that was a straightforward ask. You literally followed the man. You walked where He walked. You watched what He did. Done.

But we are here in 2026. So, what does following God look like now?

I meditated on because I think we say it a lot without really stopping to answer it. Follow God. Okay. But what does that mean on a Tuesday when you're tired and your inbox is full and the world is loud?

Here's where I landed.

It starts with your heart. Every time I read scripture about discipleship, about God's will, about what He actually wants from us, the through line is the same. It's love. Love God. Love others the way He loves you. 

But I don't think it stops there because love without action is just a feeling. So following God today looks like sharing your faith. Giving testimony. Telling people what He's done, what He's promised, how good He actually is. That is part of the job. The genuine, this-really-happened version of it.

It also looks like being selfless when it's inconvenient. Uplifting people. Showing up for others physically, emotionally, however they need it. Not because it feels good but because God called us to support and encourage one another. And honestly, we have zero excuse in this era. Technology gives us access to almost anyone at almost any time. We can encourage someone across the world in thirty seconds.

Following God today is a commitment. And I think it probably looks different for each of us depending on where we are, what we're carrying, and who's in front of us. But the core doesn't change: your heart, your love, your witness, and your willingness to give something of yourself for someone else.
