If God Takes Care of the Birds, Why Are People Still Homeless?
I read Matthew 6:25 this morning. Do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink, or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes.
My first question was simple. Does that verse mean exactly what it says, that I should not worry about food or clothing because God is going to handle it? And does the rest of the passage ever mention shelter, or is it only food and clothes?
Here is what my research found looking closer at the passage. Matthew 6:25 through 34 names food, drink, and clothing specifically. It never lists shelter by name. But the argument Jesus makes is not a checklist of exactly three needs. He points to birds who do not store up food and lilies who do not make their own clothes, and says God provides for both. If God takes care of creatures who cannot plan for themselves, and I matter more to Him than a bird or a flower, shelter falls under that same logic even though the word never shows up in the verse.
Food and clothes are not what keep me up at night. I have more than enough of both, and so does my son. If I worry about anything, it is the bigger expenses. Car insurance. Utilities. Bills being paid in general.
Then here is the question I could not let go of. What about the people I see living under the highway when I drive through downtown Atlanta? What about someone who does not have a roof or the money for their next meal? If God really takes care of birds and trees the way this verse says, why does that same care look so different for a person standing on the street?
My research on this did not tie up in a neat bow. Jesus never promises that nothing bad will happen to a believer. He lived it. He said the Son of Man has nowhere to lay his head, Matthew 8:20. The early church in Acts 2 did not survive because food fell from the sky. They survived because believers sold what they had and made sure nobody among them went without. Deuteronomy 15 says there should not be a poor person among God's people, and ties that directly to obedience and generosity, not to God dropping supplies from heaven.
Putting that together, here is where I keep coming back to. God's plan for provision runs through people as much as it runs through miracles. When someone is on the street with no help coming, that is usually people not doing what we were told to do, not God breaking His word from Matthew 6.
I do not obsess over bills getting paid because I am living in a place of peace that goes beyond what I can explain in the natural. But I do wonder when that peace turns into an actual answer, since I do not see anything happening yet. I know what a false sense of security feels like. I had a corporate job I thought was stable. They decided when it ended and how much severance I would get, and that was that. So I understand why someone would want proof instead of a promise.
Then there is the other side of all this, the wants I have that I do not technically need. I can see sky and trees and vegetation from almost every window in my home right now, and I did not expect that view to matter to me the way it does. I want a bigger place with a similar view one day. I want to travel and see the places I have only read about in scripture. I keep feeling pulled toward building a space where women can rest and be restored, and my cousin described a dream to me months ago that sounds a lot like what I keep picturing every time I look at houses.
Psalm 37:4 says delight yourself in the Lord and He will give you the desires of your heart. My research on that verse found it is not a formula where wanting something hard enough makes God hand it over. It describes what happens the longer you actually delight in Him. Your wants start getting shaped by what He wants, so the desire that survives that process is not just a random want anymore. A desire that keeps showing up over months, that is about serving other people instead of just me, and that lines up with something someone else independently sensed for me too, is worth praying over and moving toward with wisdom, without forcing it or writing it off either.
The devotional I read today put it as seek His kingdom first and trust Him with the rest, pulling from Matthew 6:33, that if I seek His kingdom and His righteousness first, these things will be given to me as well. I am not seeing everything I am praying for show up in the natural yet. I still do not have a clean answer for why the wait, or why some people are still under that highway tonight. What I do have is a decision about where my attention goes while I wait. Seeking Him first and worrying less are the same instruction, said two different ways.
