What Does It Mean to Worship God With Reverence and Awe? (Hebrews 12:28-29)

Some verses you can read fast. This one made me slow all the way down.

"Therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, let us be thankful, and so worship God acceptably with reverence and awe, for our God is a consuming fire." Hebrews 12:28-29

On the surface it seems simple. Be grateful. Worship God the right way. I know what gratitude is. I know what worship is. But when I sat with the actual words, I realized I knew them individually and not together. What does it mean to worship acceptably? What does reverence look like in real life? And what in the world does it mean that God is a consuming fire?

Receiving a Kingdom That Cannot Be Shaken

This part I could trace. The kingdom we are receiving is already set. It cannot be moved. It cannot be purchased. It cannot be destroyed. It is already victorious. That is not a future hope hanging in the balance. That is a done deal.

So gratitude is not a suggestion here. It is the only response that fits the size of what we have actually been given.

What Reverence and Awe Actually Mean

Reverence is respect, but not the kind you give because you are told to. It is the kind that shows up when you actually pay attention to who you are dealing with.

Awe is what I feel when I think about how God created everything. How it all works together, both within its own ecosystem and as part of His entire system. The detail. The intricacy. The way nothing about it is an accident. Awe is what happens when something is too big and too well made for you to take in all at once.

Put those two together and that is what "acceptable" worship looks like. Not a performance. A posture. Gratitude, respect, and a sense of wonder, all aimed at the right place.

God Is a Consuming Fire

This is the part that stopped me. Fire consumes. Fire purifies. Fire cannot be tamed or boxed in by us. This phrase is not about God being dangerous toward His people. It is about His holiness and His power being too real to treat casually. You do not approach a consuming fire with indifference. You approach it aware of exactly what it is.

That is the reverence this verse is asking for. Not fear that pushes you away. Awareness that brings you closer with the right amount of respect.

Why This Matters

I think a lot of us read scripture like this and assume understanding because the words are familiar. But familiar is not the same as understood. This verse is not complicated because the words are hard. It is dense because it is asking something specific of us, and specific things require us to actually slow down and think about it.

If you have ever read a verse and felt like you should already know what it means, you are not behind. You are just being invited to dig deeper. That is exactly what this one did for me.
