The Day I Realized the Holy Spirit Has Been Doing More Than I Thought

Today, February 18, 2026, is another day God gifted me and I’m grateful.

Scripture Reference: John 14:26 (NIV)
“But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.”

I LOVE this scripture, and honestly, I don’t think I’ve ever really noticed it before. I’m used to Jesus being the one who teaches, so when I read that the Holy Spirit will teach me… I had an aha moment. Like, wait what? The Holy Spirit teaches?

And then the word Advocate caught my attention. I don’t think I talk to the Holy Spirit very much. He’s always felt like the mysterious One. But the idea that He is advocating for me? That made me pause.

I know what advocating looks like in my world, someone who has your back, someone who speaks up for you, someone who says, “She’s good. Give her a chance.” But is that what the Holy Spirit does? Or is it something different?

So, I started digging.

I learned that Jesus is the one speaking in this verse. He’s talking to His disciples before the crucifixion, preparing them for life without Him physically here. And He basically says, “I’m sending Someone who will keep doing what I’ve been doing.”

That surprised me.  I didn’t realize the Holy Spirit was continuing Jesus’ work.

Then I learned that “Advocate” comes from the word paraklētos, which means:

• Helper and Defender
• Comforter and Counselor
• The One who speaks on your behalf
• Guide and Strengthener
• The One who stands beside you 

That’s way deeper than my “talking me up” example.  This is more like:

• “She belongs to God leave her alone.”
• “Here’s the truth she needs right now.”
• “Here’s the peace she can’t find on her own.”
• “Here’s the strength she doesn’t even know she has.”

I learned that the Holy Spirit has been doing this for me all along. I just didn’t know it was Him.

The Holy Spirit came into my life the moment I believed in Jesus. He’s not visiting. Not checking in. He’s Living in me. Which explains the clarity, the conviction, the peace, the “click” moments I’ve been having. That wasn’t a coincidence or luck. That was Him.

He advocates for me by speaking to me through Scripture, through conviction, through peace, through those little nudges like “slow down” or “don’t say that.”

He advocates for me. Romans 8:26-27 says He literally prays for me when I don’t have words.

He fights lies with truth. He protects my steps, like the time I drove the wrong way, and nothing happened. That wasn’t luck. That was my Advocate.

And now I’m realizing I’ve been talking to God and thanking Jesus, but I haven’t really acknowledged the Holy Spirit. Not intentionally. But now that I know what He’s been doing, I want to learn how to walk with Him, to acknowledge Him. Everyday. All day. 

I’m not deep or super spiritual, I’m learning this in real time.
